Health Research If you are looking for solid scientific information on the latest research and treatments for disease, then the following journals and search tools will be helpful. These research sources focus on alternative medicine and holistic research, along with nutrition and general science. This isn’t light reading, but it is empowering to learn the information right from the source!

General Research Tools

Cochrane Library – detailed reviews of clinical trials to analyze broad topics (i.e. does sodium really raise blood pressure).

Directory of Open Access Journals – a source for scientific journals provided free of charge.

Google Scholar – a special search engine just for scientific research articles.

Medscape – a resource from WebMD which is less advertisement-driven and more focused on medical research and education with content reviewed by a medical professional advisory board. *Site requires registration to gain free access.

PubMed – a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that provides research articles on biomedical topics.

PubMed Health – a subset of PubMed which provides consumer-friendly information on medical conditions and treatments.

World Health Organization (WHO) – Publications– an excellent resource for research on international health topics. Via the site’s database you can search for studies by topic.

Alternative Medicine Journals / Databases

Advances in Mind-Body Medicine – explores the relationship between mind, body, and health.

Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine – an evidence-based, peer-reviewed journal on alternative topics in medicine.

AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine) – mostly European titles of more than 500 Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) journals.

Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (eCAM) – an international, peer-reviewed journal on complementary and alternative medicine.

Explore Journal – “The Journal of science and healing.” It offers research in alternative modalities in topics such as spirituality, consciousness, and general science.

Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal (IMCJ) – “provides practitioners with a practical and comprehensive approach to integrating alternative therapies with conventional medicine.”

Journal of Scientific Exploration – a quarterly scientific journal from the Society for Scientific Exploration (SSE) a group of scientists concerned with the study of “unexplained phenomena” and alternative medicine.

MANTIS (Manual, Alternative and Natural Therapy Index System) – covers chiropractic, osteopathic, herbal medicine, homeopathy, PT, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Natural Medicine Journal – an excellent source for the latest research on herbs, nutritional supplements, and natural healing modalities with articles typically written by naturopaths.

Nutrition Journals / Databases

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition – the site has a box for “Search across hundreds of full-text journals” that offers access to other CAM journals.

CARDS (Computer Access to Research on Dietary Supplements) – A comprehensive source for research on dietary supplement ingredients and health outcomes.

PubMed Dietary Supplement Subset – a tool for researching PubMed articles that are strictly on dietary supplements.

The Journal of Functional Foods in Health and Disease – a journal investigating the role of foods in disease prevention.

Scientific Journals & Magazines

Autoimmunity Reviews – a journal on autoimmune conditions.

International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (IJPSR) – a journal covering a variety of pharmaceutical applications including herbal treatments like this review of Anti-Arthritis Plants (vol 3, issue 4)
